Itinerary
Itinerary for the Trip to Zinacantán and San Juan Chamula
Departure: 9:30 am from the hotel in San Cristóbal
We start our day with a departure from the hotel to the charming community of Zinacantán. This magical place, famous for its bats, offers us a unique experience as we delve into the daily life of its inhabitants.
Visit to a Family in Zinacantán
Upon arrival, we will visit a local family where we can observe women working with the woven backstrap loom, an activity that dates back to pre-Hispanic times and is an essential part of Maya cultural heritage. The intricate designs and colors of their textiles reflect the identity and tradition of the community.
Tasting Pox
We cannot leave Zinacantán without trying pox, a traditional drink made from corn. This liquor, often considered a gift from the land, will allow us to connect even more with the local culture while enjoying its authentic flavor.
Traditional Cooking and Handmade Tortillas
After the tasting, we will enter the family kitchen to witness the making of handmade tortillas, cooked over a wood stove. This activity will provide us with an intimate view of daily life in Zinacantán and the importance of cooking in Maya culture.
San Juan Chamula: A Spiritual Journey
Next, we will head to San Juan Chamula, an indigenous town where the tsotsil language is spoken. This place is famous for its church, where shamans perform rituals and ceremonies that blend elements of Catholicism with ancestral traditions. The mystical atmosphere and the rituals inside will allow us to discover the religious syncretism that characterizes the region.
Return: 3:00 pm
Finally, we will return to the hotel in San Cristóbal, taking a piece of the culture and traditions of Zinacantán and San Juan Chamula in our hearts.
